DO ADOLESCENTS NEED SUPPLEMENTS?

DO ADOLESCENTS NEED SUPPLEMENTS?

There is nothing like eating natural, fresh food. Most young adults who eat a well-balanced diet and are generally healthy do not necessarily need supplements. At least for the time being.

Though this topic is a little complex.

If you are an active individual or an athlete, then your dietary needs differ from a person who leads a more sedentary lifestyle. An active person needs a higher calorie diet and will benefit from taking multivitamin and mineral supplements.

However, those of you who are not athletic are not off the hook. Listen up!

If you want to make an informed decision about whether you need multivitamin/mineral supplements or not, you need to know a little bit about how our food is grown.

Our food is grown on a commercial scale and this leads to food losing vital nutrients. This is how it works. As soon as a crop is harvested, next crop is planted. This constant planting dries out the soil from vital minerals. Therefore, the food that is grown is already missing minerals and vitamins that it should have. Now, even if you eat that plant regularly, you are not receiving from it what you should.

Therefore, regular intake of multivitamin and mineral supplement is highly recommended for all people irrespective of age and lifestyle.

The nutrients you consume at this age will determine the kind of lifestyle you lead at a later age. If you eat well now, you will age later, will remain active longer, and will be able to avoid many diseases commonly associated with older age. Therefore, think of supplements like an investment. You are investing in your health, and you will cash it at an older age.

WHICH SUPPLEMENTS ARE RIGHT FOR ME

If you are confused about which vitamins to choose, you are not alone! The options available are enough to drive anyone crazy. This is why you need to know the basics of choosing a good supplement, so you won’t be a victim of false advertisement.

If you have a specific deficiency such as iron, vitamin D, or any other vitamin or mineral, you should follow the advice of your doctor or nutritionist and let them recommend a supplement for you.

However, if you are a generally healthy individual with no known deficiencies, I recommend that instead of buying multivitamins from drug stores like Walgreens or CVS, you get it from a reputable supplement company that sells quality products.

There are two main things you want to consider before choosing a supplement:

  1. What are the ingredients?
  2. What is amount per serving of these ingredients? (ex. the amount of Vitamin A 10,000 IU as opposed to 5,000 IU)

Take a look at the ‘Supplement Facts’ section of the vitamin below. This is what I take and recommend to my clients. It is packed with a variety of nutrients that are not commonly found in other supplements. When you are considering buying a supplement, try to find something that has similar range of nutrients.
