Usually, gout attacks last between 3 to 10 days, or even longer. These days of pain can add years to your age. The pain leaves you miserable during the day and sleepless during the night.

What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis which is caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream. The symptoms of gout are due to the crystallization of uric acid in the body and the body’s response to these unwanted crystals. Gout most often affects the joint in the base of the big toe, but it can occur in any joint of the body including the ankles, knees, wrists, fingers etc.

Gout is not contagious, it is not an infection you can catch from someone. It is a disorder, often inherited, and occurs more often in men than women. Symptoms of gout usually begin to show between the ages of 30 and 50, however, you have exceptions to this norm and people much younger, and even children, can have gout.

A gout attack can occur suddenly, making you feel like your affected joint is on fire. The affected area feels hot, swollen and so tender that even the clothing or a sheet may seem intolerable.

This brings us to the next question…

What Causes Gout?

Like I said earlier, gout is not something you catch, like an infection. It is a chronic condition which is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, or hyperuricemia. Uric acid is produced in the body during the breakdown of purines, which are the chemical compounds that are found in high amounts in certain foods.

When you eat these foods in large quantity, they generate high levels of uric acid in the body. The body cannot process it and the acid starts to crystallize inside the tissues around the joints.

This results in a range of symptoms including intense joint pain, inflammation, redness, swelling, tenderness, inability to move the joints, and a range of pain caused by pressure on the nerves due to swelling.

All in all, these high levels of uric acid cause the body to go haywire.

The Smart Approach

I believe the smart approach is to nip it in the bud. Don’t let uric acid crystallize in the first place.

Before I proceed any further, you need to know that this is a life time commitment. What I will share with you is something you will have to do for the rest of your life, even if you feel better. Like prescribed medications for heart patients. They need to take them regardless of how they feel. You have to follow this advice for the rest of your life. Whoever tells you otherwise is being dishonest.The cure in this case is prevention.

However, there is good news. Research, as well as my own personal experience, has suggested that if you manage to keep away a gout attack for 3 years straight, there is a good chance you can reverse the condition and your body heals entirely.

If you follow these guidelines, you will never have to endure the crippling pain again. Remember, consistency and discipline are the secret behind the success in this case.

How to Prevent Gout

This requires educating yourself about the foods which contain high levels of purine, even if some of these foods don’t necessarily bother you. They may not affect you now, but if you are not careful, they will be high risk foods for you later.

Below is a list of foods which contain high levels of purine.

Foods considered high in purine content include:

  • Seafood, shellfish, some fish including anchovies, sardines, mackerel, scallops, herring, mussels, codfish, trout and haddock
  • Some meats such as bacon, turkey, veal, venison, liver, beef kidney, brain, and sweetbreads (organ meat from the thymus gland and pancreas)
  • Alcoholic beverages—all of them, though beer being the worst

Foods considered moderate in purine content include:

  • Meats such as beef, poultry, pork, and lamb
  • Crab lobster, oysters, and shrimp
  • Vegetables such as asparagus, spinach, green peas, mushroom, eggplant, and cauliflower
  • Kidney beans, lentils, and lima beans

Does that mean you cannot eat any of these foods?

I am a foodie, and I cannot accept that for an answer.

The good news is you can eat them all you want! Here is the difference between me and most other health care practitioners. However, there is a correct way of consuming these foods.

This is what you do.

Take an antidote—before and after.

Since uric acid is the main problem, we need to know what causes it. Now, we know that foods high in purines cause uric acid. Therefore, before you eat these foods, load your body with foods which will help breakdown these purines and not allow uric acid to remain and crystallize in the body.

However, I recommend you do the following with each meal, whether you are consuming a high purine diet or not. This consistency with each meal is what will help reverse the condition in the long run.

If you stop following the advice, even after a couple of years, the body will accumulate uric acid and you may experience gout attacks again. All you need is to miss this advice for 2 to 3 meals in a row and you will start having the problem again; pretty much undoing your previous efforts.

This is the recipe:

Approximately 30 minutes before and after you eat, consume minimum one and preferably all of the following…

  • Lemon water
  • Mint
  • Cucumber
  • Arugula
  • Pineapple since it contains high levels of bromelain

If these foods are not available, you can substitute them with cranberries, apple cider vinegar, and bromelain supplements.

You must take these before and after the meal. You can mix and match so that if you eat pineapple before the meal, you can have cucumber/mint/arugula salad afterwards.

A point to remember here is that according to the portion size of the food, you have to increase the antidote. If the meal you eat today is high in purine content, instead of having one lemon in water, take more; or instead of taking one pill of bromelain before and after meal, take two.

Detox water is also a great way to encourage your kidneys to excrete impurities, including uric acid.

Some of the most common (and delicious) detox drinks are infused waters. You can infuse water overnight with either mint, cucumber, lemon, and ginger, or all of them, and drink this water throughout the day.

Supplements are also great, and a far easier method to deal with the condition. They are especially helpful for people who have irregular meal habits or may not have control over the meals that are prepared. The best supplements to consume in this case are:

  • Bromelain
  • Plant enzymes (digestive enzymes extracted from plants)

The key is not to miss the antidote—before or after. If you miss taking it at the recommended time, take it as soon as possible.

The bottom line is, you want to prevent uric acid from crystallizing in the tissue.
Remember, prevention is the cure.
